The Duke of York visits Rome and Milan

The Duke of York visited Italy in his role as the UK’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment.

Whilst in Rome, The Duke of York held meetings with the UN World Food Programme, the world’s largest humanitarian agency which aims to reduce global hunger and provide emergency support in the face of natural disasters such as the Haiti earthquake. His Royal Highness gave his support to the organisation, for which the UK has been the 5th largest donor in 2010.

The Duke of York’s visit to Italy coincided with Milan Design Week, which gave him the opportunity to promote British design and designers. Design is one of the most profitable sectors of UK Creative Industries with an annual turnover of £11.6 billion and employing 185,500 people in the UK. His Royal Highness visited British companies exhibiting during the Design Week and attended a UK Design Reception.

The trip also came at an opportune time because Milan has recently been awarded the Expo, the world fair forecast to attract 2 million visitors in 2015. The Duke of York called on Senator Lucio Stanca, Chief Executive of Milan Expo 2015 to discuss the plans for the Expo and to offer the assistance of British companies in its design and construction.

His Royal Highness also called on Mrs. Moratti, Mayor of Milan to discuss the latest issues affecting British businesses active in the city. Finally, The Duke visited the Sir James Henderson School, which has 45 nationalities represented and applies a British teaching style and curriculum.
