The Duke of York visits the South West and South Wales

The Duke of York visited the South West and South Wales on the 18th October, 2011 and undertook visits to Wellington Academy, SS Great Britain, SETsquared and FSG Tool and Die.

The Duke of York is President of Wellington Academy in Tidworth Wiltshire. The Academy has been transformed from a low performing school in Wiltshire to one of the top schools in the district. His Royal Highness was invited to officially open the Academy and also award The Duke of York Outstanding Achievement Award to Claire Stevens. The Duke of York had the opportunity to meet students and tour the new £32m campus.

Afterwards, His Royal Highness visited SS Great Britain. The Duke of York is Patron of the SS Great Britain Trust and there has been a considerable amount of work completed in the last 6 years. His Royal Highness had the opportunity to be briefed on the recent developments of the ship. In 2010, the Trust opened the Brunel Institute, a £6m development that runs ambitious educational programmes including the ‘Future Brunels’ scheme. His Royal Highness was escorted around the ship and met with staff, volunteers as well as school children who are part of the current ‘Future Brunels’ scheme.  

Bristol is developing its reputation as a technological hub where new businesses can thrive. At SETsquared, The Duke of York was briefed on areas that are driving Bristol’s success and the business development activities by companies such as Setsquared. SETsquared accelerates the development of technology-based ventures from the initial idea to commercialisation via a network of leading universities and specialists. His Royal Highness met with a number of staff and took part in a discussion with other high tech SMEs.

FSG Tool and Die is based in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Tafand is a design and manufacture toolmaker. His Royal Highness toured the world class facility. FSG has become an internationally renowned design and manufacturing company and is going from strength to strength. The Duke of York met with members of staff from different teams as well as members and graduates of the successful apprenticeship scheme that FSG runs.
