The Duke of York visited the world-leading Orion Laser Facility at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in Berkshire on 4th November, 2014. HRH toured the facility as Patron of the Year of Light 2015.

The Orion Laser Facility is used to conduct research into high energy density physics, which occurs within nuclear explosions or stars. The facility consists of a large neodymium glass laser system housed in a room the size of a football pitch.

The Duke was briefed on the role of The Orion Laser Facility within AWE. HRH toured the Orion Laser – one of the biggest capital science projects in the United Kingdom.

The Duke met with students from Imperial College who were involved in an exhibition for the Royal Society Exhibition which recreated conditions at the centre of the Sun. HRH had the opportunity to meet with staff from The Orion Laser Facility and unveiled a Plaque to commemorate the visit.
