Based in the Round Tower at Windsor Castle, the Royal Archives contains documents relating to the Royal Family and British Monarchy over a period spanning almost 250 years.

The Archives preserves the personal and official correspondence of former monarchs and of other members of the Royal Family past and present, as well as administrative records of the departments of the Royal Household.

Documents range from lists of the staff employed by King George IV as Prince of Wales to diaries of monarchs such as Queen Victoria and King George V. They provide a fascinating insight into the history of the Monarchy.

The Keeper of the Royal Archives is responsible to The Queen for the papers held and for access to them. Direct access is granted to certain research academics. Nevertheless, there is a written information service which aims to answer specific questions from the public; however, there may be a charge for certain services.
