Sandringham House has been the private home of four generations of Sovereigns since 1862.
The Queen’s grandfather, King George V, described the Norfolk retreat as, “the place I love better than anywhere in the world”.
His Majesty’s reign saw the birth of a new Christmas tradition. The first Christmas Day broadcast to the Empire was made live over the airwaves on 25 December 1932, from Sandringham’s ‘business-room’.
Six years previously The Queen paid her first visit to Sandringham, aged just eight months, when she visited her paternal grandparents for Christmas 1926.
Today, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, with other members of the Royal Family, traditionally spend the festive period at Sandringham.
