Working life: Joined the Royal Navy after school and fought in the Second World War (1939-1945). Won the Greek War Cross of Valour. Commanded his own ship, HMS Magpie. Since 1952 has supported The Queen in her work. Works for around 800 charities and other organisations. Started the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for young people. Has travelled thousands of miles with the Queen and on his own in the UK and abroad
Skills: Talented sportsman – used to enjoy polo and sailing and now is skilled at competitive horse-carriage driving 
Speaks good French and some German 
Used to hold pilot’s licence and has flown lots of different aircraft
Hobbies: Interested in science and nature, horse-carriage driving, oil painting and bird watching
