Her Majesty  met the architects who designed the centre before touring the new state-of-the-art facilities, including the UK’s first ‘surf wave machine’, a training facility for surfers. The Queen unveiled a plaque to mark the reopening of the centre.

Mr Proctor, a member of staff at the centre, said of The Queen’s visit:

‘It was a fantastic experience to have her come her and to have the opportunity to walk her round the centre was a once in a lifetime experience.’

Her Majesty and His Royal Highness visited the community library housed within the school complex before being given a tour of the school facilities, during which she met pupils, staff and community organisations.

Head Teacher David Tyler spoke of the excitement of both teachers and pupils on a memorable day for the school:

‘The Queen was genuinely interested in the school. She wanted to know what goes on and who uses it.

It was a wonderful experience. I believe everybody will have memories of today that they will take with them for the rest of their lives.

I think the children were both nervous and excited in equal proportions. But they will remember with pride and satisfaction that the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh have come to this community.’
