The Day His Royal Highness The Duke of York visited my school

Jenaia Harrison, a pupil in Year 5, wrote a report of The Duke’s visit to St Thomas CE vc Primary School.

On Thursday 8th May 2014,our school, St Thomas CE vc Primary School, Huddersfield, received one of the most spectacular and unforgettable surprises in a life time…Prince Andrew was coming to OUR school! I was particularly excited because not only was he arriving in approximately 2 minutes, but also I had the opportunity to stand the closest to him due to the fact that I won the competition to create the best Yorkshire flag.

I felt butterflies fluttering in my stomach, a sweat bead formed on my forehead, my head was spinning with a variety of thoughts, and furthermore a slight feeling of apprehension overcame me! The hall became a room of murmurs. Suddenly, in the blink of an eye I was brought back to reality, waiting in anticipation for the Royal prince’s arrival. Glancing slowly around the packed hall, I observed all of our hard working teachers anxiously whispering to each other, moreover I also caught a glimpse of each and every student bubbling with extreme happiness, I smiled to myself with great euphoria, knowing what we were about to experience.

After what felt like an age, His Royal Highness made an exceptional entrance which impacted on the hall. EVERYONE gasped mesmerised!! The hall fell silent, words were exchanged by Mr Rushby (Head Teacher) and HRH the Duke of York before two students, who were very fortunate and smiley, shook his hand grinning like Cheshire cats.

This experience will be dearly cherished for my entire life.
