The Duke of York undertook Official Engagements in Malaysia on 27th June, 2016.
His Royal Highness, Grand President, opened the 32nd Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League Conference in Kuala Lumpur. The Conference was attended by representatives from 42 countries. During the Conference, The Duke said “There is important business that needs to be done. Our first responsibility is to those we help.”
Next, HRH visited the Alice Smith School Primary Campus to celebrate its 70th Anniversary. The school was founded by Mrs Alice Fairfield-Smith in 1946. During the visit, The Duke of York met with the finalists of the ‘Bentley Be Extraordinary School Competition’ where pupils had designed a Bentley Car of the Future. This competition is part of the British High Commission Education is GREAT campaign which will take place in Malaysia for the next 3 years. The campaign focuses on consolidating the United Kingdom as Malaysia’s Education and Training Partner of Choice. HRH met primary school children celebrating The Queen’s 90th Birthday and was given gifts made by the pupils to bring back to the UK for Her Majesty.
The Duke later met key Malaysian Business Leaders for lunch at the Residence of the British High Commissioner and was able to discuss their views on their existing investments in the United Kingdom and opportunities for further activity.
HRH later visited Petrosains where The Duke of York heard about the work supported by Petronas to build Science, Technology and Engineering Skills in Malaysia. HRH was also able to meet Scientists involved in projects supported by the Newton-Ungko Omar Fund which aims to use science and innovation partnerships to promote collaboration in research between the UK and Malaysia.
Next, The Duke hosted an Afternoon Tea for [email protected] Malaysia Entrepreneurs.
Later, HRH, Chancellor, attended a Reception for Alumni from the University of Huddersfield, Kuala Lumpur and launched the opening of The University of Huddersfield Regional Office. The Duke of York also announced the new Duke of York Chancellor’s Student Scholarship. HRH was installed Chancellor of the University in 2015.
Finally, The Duke met with Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, Managing Director, YTL Corporation, for dinner.
