The Duke of York visited Coronation Park which is at the centre of the redevelopment of Old Town, Port Moresby. HRH had the opportunity to meet with architects and the redevelopment team.
The Duke visited the Pacific Games Village at Papua New Guinea University and met athletes representing the 24 Pacific Islands. Australia and New Zealand will compete for the first time in the history of the Games.
The Duke took part in the final stage of the Pacific Games Baton Race Day. The Pacific Games Baton was carried by more than 2,000 people and passed through all 22 Papua New Guinea provinces.
Later HRH attended a garden party at the National Orchid Garden. The Duke met John Taka, one of the 2 Queen’s Young Leaders from Papua New Guinea. John set up “Seeds of Hope” to help his rural community tackle some of the challenges it faced. So far the programme has enabled villagers to build new roads and start a potato-selling project to help pay for students’ school fees.
Finally, The Duke attended the Opening Ceremony of the Pacific Games. The ceremony included a “Sing-Sing”. HRH delivered a message from The Queen. Read the message here.
