Sportsmanship

The Duke of York has always enjoyed sport. At Heatherdown, he played cricket, rugby and soccer, earning his cricket colours and representing the school at both rugby and cricket. At Gordonstoun he continued to play cricket and rugby as well as field hockey. He captained the Gordonstoun 1st cricket team in his last year.

At Lakefield College School in Canada, he skied for the school. Prince Andrew continued to play hockey briefly for BRNC Dartmouth and he played squash for various ships’ teams. Whilst at Gordonstoun, His Royal Highness began his passion for flying by learning to fly a glider with the Air Training Corps and also, along with Prince Charles, learnt to parachute, earning his Parachutist’s badge from the Royal Air Force prior to joining the Royal Navy.

The Duke, in more recent years, has taken up golf and is Patron of 12 Royal golf clubs and Patron to a further 12 Golf Clubs and Golf Societies, and is President of the Royal Household Golf Club. His Royal Highness is now working on behalf of the game to ensure that as many people can participate as possible.

The Duke is also patron of the On Course Foundation, a charity providing opportunities for members of the Armed Services who have been seriously injured to play golf and find employment opportunities in the golfing industry and with golf related businesses.

His Royal Highness is also President of The Faldo Series which organises junior competitions through the world and is Patron of The Golf Foundation whose initiatives make golf more accessible to children from all backgrounds and abilities.

On the administration side, he is a member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, sits on its Amateur Status Committee and was Captain of the Club in its 250th anniversary year (2003-4).
